Machine insight: Rösler RMBS Engine Block Blast Machine

, A.Altmann - Назад к обзору

The Rösler engine block blast machine RMBS is a turbine blast machine developed specifically for the machining of engine blocks. Its defining feature is the manipulator clamp developed exclusively by Rösler, which securely grips workpieces and moves them in a controlled manner throughout the blasting process. This enables reliable machining of even complex geometries and hard-to-reach interior areas.

The system is designed for blast cleaning, de-sanding, and deburring, as well as for producing homogeneous surfaces on engine blocks from commercial vehicles, marine engines, and other large castings. Compared to conventional blasting methods, the RMBS offers decisive advantages: significantly shorter process times, reduced labor requirements, greater process reliability, and substantially improved automation capability across the entire blasting process.

Using the manipulator clamp and specially adapted gripping jaws, workpieces weighing several metric tons can be picked up and transferred into the blast cabin. During the blasting process, components are rotated, pivoted, and positioned in a targeted manner. This ensures reliable removal of core sand even from complex internal geometries, while preventing blasting media from accumulating in cavities. At the same time, the controlled workpiece movement eliminates shadowing effects and ensures a uniform blasting result across the entire component surface.

In addition to individual large engine blocks, multiple smaller workpieces can be processed simultaneously. The specific system configuration is tailored individually to each customer's requirements. Using advanced simulation tools, the number, position, and alignment of the turbines are optimally designed to ensure that all areas of the workpiece are covered efficiently and uniformly by the blast media stream.

A further advantage of the RMBS lies in its high cost-effectiveness. Through the targeted movement of workpieces within the blast zone, the desired results are achieved significantly faster than with conventional spinner hanger systems. In many applications, de-sanding and blast cleaning can be performed in a single machining step. This increases capacity, reduces floor space requirements, and in many cases even allows multiple existing systems to be replaced by a single RMBS.

The system also sets benchmarks in terms of energy efficiency and wear protection. The blast cabin is constructed from 25 mm manganese steel and lined with replaceable 15 mm manganese steel plates. When processing smaller workpieces, individual turbines can be selectively switched off, reducing energy consumption and wear. In addition, the blast performance and angle of attack of the turbines can be adjusted programmatically to suit each individual component, ensuring optimum blast coverage and maximum process efficiency at all times.

The result is a high-performance, flexible, and cost-effective blasting solution that increases productivity, reduces labor demands, and consistently ensures a high level of machining quality.
